At Port Harcourt Maximum Prison, at least one inmate has died
According to the information collected, the two prisoners held each other up until one of the inmates died, sparking a protest among the other prisoners.
One prisoner was killed and 11 others were injured in an altercation at Port Harcourt Maximum Prison in Port Harcourt at 1 to 2 p.m.
Disagreements turned out to be uncontrollable as many prisoners tried to get out of the high walls of the facility, but were overthrown by a joint security team who fired shots outside the fence, leaving 11 - 12 inmates with serious gunshot wounds.
A spokeswoman for the Port Harcourt Correctional Center, Juliet Ofoni, confirmed the incident.
The incident happened at the old township correctional facility in Port Harcourt, he said.
An angry fellow inmate protested and tried to attack but the situation was quickly controlled by authorities, he said.
Some inmates tried to break into the jail and climbed over the fence but were shot dead by security guards outside the Correctional Center, Ofoni said.
The incident happened at a time when prisoners were at loggerheads. As it turned out, one of them died during the fighting, which led to prisoners protesting that their man had been killed, he said.
He told reporters, "You know we all have friends. So as they were in the courtyard, those who were friends of the deceased began to protest why they started the problems,
He added, therefore, they wanted to take revenge on the other prisoners and thus create chaos in the courtyard.
It therefore leads to the intervention of the authorities. That's when we started using tear gas to calm the situation but suddenly, some of them grabbed it and jumped over the fence. So some of them try to run away. Some we shot outside the yard to take them down. He added
Some inmates received serious gunshot wounds but no one was killed during the operation. As I speak to you they are in the hospital in fear of treatment.he said
He said the situation was under control. It is calm everywhere. But they should not have gotten to the point of thinking about prison breaks and fighting until one of their worlds was gone. ”
