According to reports, one armed suspect was killed and 12 others were arrested following a shootout with police on Friday afternoon.
The suspects,
aged between 26 and 58, were allegedly planning to hit a jewelery store in one of the shops in Pretoria, said Hawks spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Philani Nkwalase.
Police stopped a group of protesters at Maphalla Street near the Mamelodi Crossing mall, Nkwalase said.
The multi-disciplinary police unit analyzed the details and identified the suspected criminal house in Mamelodi West.
Nkwalase said, "Four vehicles with false documents were found in a safe area."
He said four vehicles allegedly used during the crime were seized for further investigation and three firearms were recovered from the two vehicles.
"One of the four vehicles was fitted with a [j] signal and another jamming was found in a safe house."
The suspects were expected to appear in the Mamelodi Magistrate's Court on Monday on charges of murder, attempted murder, possession of an unlicensed firearm, conspiracy to commit murder, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
