The Tamale High Court has remanded a 34-year-old man on charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm.
The Northern District Attorney General, Salia Abdul-Quddus, has asked the court to return the accused to police custody so that he can assist with further investigations.
But the defendant's lawyer, Ibrahim Yussif, applied for bail but the bail application was rejected by the court.
The accused, Mohammed Issah popularly known as "waters", has not been arrested and will appear in court again on April 25-2022.
The facts were presented to the court on Thursday, April 8, this year, that the suspect was arrested at the Pigu checkpoint on the Tamale-Bolgatanga Highway during a police intelligence operation.
The suspect is believed to have smuggled weapons from Togo via Cinkasse and on his way to the regional capital, Tamale.
Police then searched the car and confiscated six 9mm Caliber Bruni rifles that were hidden in a pocket and covered with a smock.
The Police Service, in a statement, commended the Northern Region Police Commander, especially the team involved in the operation, for their diligence.
Police have ensured the safety and well-being of everyone, and police have urged members of the public to continue assisting them with leads so that they can fight crime, he said.
