Three people have been convicted of murder after burning a man to death for trying to steal a television.
The three have been found guilty of killing a Man in the Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg by burning a man alive on a charge of attempting to steal a television.
Acting Judge Stuart Wilson found Norman Makgopa, Tumelo Makgopa and Dennis Pasha guilty of intentionally kidnapping and killing Pitso Mamaropeng Rampya.
The incident happened after Rampya was taken to a nearby football stadium and set on fire for stealing their TV in October 2020.
The documents provided by the court, on October 8, 2020, at Tswelopele Extension 8, near Tembisa, Rampya tried to steal a television from Makgopa's house.
The verdict said: Norman's wife Mosibudi Modiba has been arrested.
Rampya tried to flee but was caught by Tumelo and returned to his residence.
Rampya was released on the street, when a mob started slapping and kicking him.
Rampya tried to flee, but the attack continued as the crowd asked why he was staying in Makgopa.
The court heard that one of Makgopa's neighbors accused Rampya of being a recent robber in the area.
The verdict said, the mob decided to confront Rampya, he was dragged to a nearby football stadium and burned alive.
"Rampya was forced to fall to the ground. A mattress was placed on top of him and set on fire. He died at the scene."
The four victims, Norman, Tumelo, Pasha, and Potego Mohlala, have been charged with kidnapping and culpable homicide.
During the trial, the State suspected that they were part of a mob and participated in the Rampya arrests, raids, and subsequent killings.
But Norman denied that he was part of the mob, but all the other suspects admitted to being involved when Rampya was arrested and beaten outside Makgopas' home.
Defendant, however, denied any involvement in the killings and denied any involvement in Rampya's death.
Mohlala was released from prosecution on March 3, 2022 after the State closed its case.
