A man has appeared in court on a charge of raping an 8-year-old girl in the Northern Cape

National Prosecuting Authority spokesman Mojalefa Senokoatsane said he appeared in the Jan Kempdorp Regional Court on Friday to face the charges.

A 26-year-old man in Masakeng, Northern Cape, is accused of raping an 8-year-old girl.

According to the report, the suspect allegedly raped the child on March 1. Masakeng is near Jan Kempdorp, which is about 100 miles outside Kimberly.

The suspect told the court he wanted to apply for bail and would bring two witnesses to testify on his application.

The suspect will remain in custody until his formal bail application.

He was arrested on March 10 and first appeared in court on March 11. Sinokoatsane said the strength of the case meant that the State would oppose bail for justice.
