In Cape Town, two patients were shot dead and a police officer was injured in a New Somerset hospital




The exchange of guns at New Somerset Hospital in Cape Town, which left two patients dead and one policeman injured, left nurses and staff stunned.



The Western Cape health department said workers had gone for counseling following the incident.


According to a statement issued on Saturday evening, the department said they were "shocked and dismayed following the recent shooting deaths of two people at New Somerset Hospital."



The department said, "The facts available at the time were that a man, who was ready to be released, found a gun while arguing with a police officer who was guarding another patient.


 The circumstances of the shooting are unknown at this time but it is still under investigation. The incident resulted in the injuries of two of our patients and a seriously injured police officer.


In a statement issued by a Sea Point police officer, the office took a 35-year-old man to New Somerset Hospital for medical attention when a man in a ward grabbed a police officer's gun and shot him in the head.


police said in a statement. "The man then shot two patients near him. Both died at the scene and a 32-year-old police officer was critically injured.


Western Cape Premier Alan Winde visited the hospital after receiving a report of a shooting. Winde received a report from the management of the staff.


he said. "The shooter has been arrested. Patients have been relocated to another ward.


 The safety and well-being of staff and patients are their top priorities, adds Winde



he said, Nurses are facing disaster every day and now they have to deal with this on top of it all. He added,It's a bad thing to happen, 


 "The nurses are very traumatized and we have started counseling at the hospital. They have done an amazing job while evacuating the ward to ensure that some patients are safe." said clinic manager Jacques Hendricks.



The officer was shot and taken to the operating room for treatment and then transferred to Groote Schuur Hospital. Hendricks added.


"The shooting happened at the operating room where patients were waiting for surgery. It has separate rooms," he said.


 some patients, who had huddled outside the hospital also shared their knowledge, were being treated on the first floor when they heard a gunshot three times on the second floor.



said one patient, It all went very fast. It was crazy. We only heard gunshots and everyone was scared, ”he said.
