Takoradi: Self- Acclaimed Mallam sentenced for 5years over extortion of $10K from businesswoman

The Takoradi Regional Court has sentenced a self-proclaimed 'Mallam' to five years' imprisonment on a charge of perversion in contravention of section 131 of the Criminal Procedure Act 1960 (Act 29), in Ghana.

Ibrahim Adelove, Defendant, allegedly defrauded Takoradi-based businesswoman Kike Rahim for $ 10,000 (GH ¢ 77,000) by pretending to be in possession of other goods in Togo.

A court headed by his lordship Michael Ampadu convicted Ibrahim and sentenced him to serve as a deterrent to others.

The defendant had previously defrauded a businesswoman of a large sum of money in Ghana cedis in order to help her alleviate the misery she called life.

Prosecutor Chief Inspector Robert Yawson told the court that plaintiff Mike Rahim was a perfumer and oil trader in Takoradi.

In 2019, he (the victim) approached Ibrahim Adelove, who calls himself 'Mallam' who lives in Kwesimintsim in the Effia-Kwesimintsim Municipality in the Western region.

The defendant cleverly got acquainted with the plaintiff to help him hold the brakes on his spiritual witchcraft, he added.

The defendant later revealed to the plaintiff that his mother was the cause of his decline in life and promised to help him break free from slavery.

He (the complainant) sincerely believed in Mallam who called himself and succeeded in extorting money from him.

The self-proclaimed Mallam convinced the plaintiff to give him money to buy his goods at a much cheaper price from the Republic of Togo.

The plaintiff accepted the offer and offered the defendant $ 10,000 in Ghana Cedis to purchase the items.

A week later, the defendant was unavailable and many phone calls were unsuccessful.

He (the defendant) later told the complainant that all the money was lost on the way to Togo.

However, the businessman dismissed his allegations, insisting that he return the money.

He (the suspect) returned to Takoradi but refused to return the money.

On Wednesday, March 9 2022 at 5:29 p.m., the plaintiff saw the defendant at a place called the Davi Ama Chop Bar in Takoradi and raised the alarm which led to his arrest.

The suspect then admitted that he had invested in the Togo petrol business but unfortunately the business collapsed and continued.
