Sports news:Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood has his bail EXTENDED

Manchester United star Mason Greenwood has extended his police bail for allegedly raping and abusing a young woman earlier this year.

The Greater Manchester Police (GMP) applied for an extension of his bail to Manchester and Salford Magistrates' Courts, where he was acquitted.

The 20-year-old footballer was arrested in January after posting photos and videos online.

He was also interrogated on suspicion of making death threats as he spent three nights in custody at the Greater Manchester police station.

Greenwood was released on conditional bail. This was initially extended until mid-June and has now expanded.

However police did not specify when it would end after yesterday's closed trial.

A GMP spokesman said: 'As the outcome of the bail review does not affect the continuation of the investigation, Greater Manchester Police will not provide any updates on the case until the suspect is charged or released without further ado.'

Rumors circulating on social media have recently suggested that instead of being charged, the striker may not face the police again.

However the police investigation is ongoing and Greenwood has been suspended by the Old Trafford club.

Police arrested Greenwood on January 30 after seeing a woman report allegations of physical abuse and sexual threats on social media.

Police arrived at Greenwood's £ 14,000-a-month mansion in Bowdon, Greater Manchester and were later seen questioning neighbors.

The England international has been arrested for allegedly raping and assaulting a woman during a sting operation.

During his arrest he was also arrested on a charge of sexual assault and threatening to kill his suspect before being released on bail.

Greenwood, a school product from Bradford, West Yorks, later tightened security at his home.

He hired two private security guards to guard the rented house and the technician installed a home CCTV system capable of recording up to eight cameras.

Nike terminated its sponsorship agreement with Greenwood, and later terminated it, and Electronic Arts confirmed his removal from the active team in its FIFA 22 match.

Greenwood made his first public appearance since his arrest in early April, driving a black Mercedes near Cheshire wearing a Cartier balaclava.

He appeared for the first time in England against Iceland in September 2020 but was sent home for violating Covid's guidelines.

Greenwood, who has scored 22 goals in 83 games for United, has not played for his country since.

His last appearance for the club was a 1-0 victory over West Ham on January 22.
