Akwa Ibom, father of five children will be hanged for killing his pregnant wife,

The Uyo High Court led by Justice Nkanang Bassey has sentenced a 52-year-old man, Nkereuwem Emah, to death by hanging for killing his pregnant wife,

According to reports, Emah, the father of five Mbiabam children in the Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area, was sentenced on Friday by a court, found guilty of murder, and accused of treason.

The verdict came four years after the trial, where the prosecutor called three witnesses, including the deceased's 10-year-old son, Christian Sylvanus Etim, who recounted how his father had acted against his mother.

However, at the trial on December 6, 2018, the defendant pleaded not guilty to one count of murder, contrary to Section 326 (1) of the Criminal Code, Cap 38, Volume 2, Laws of Akwa Ibom State of Nigeria, 2000.

The sentence came after four years of trial, and the prosecutor called three witnesses, including the deceased's 10-year-old son, Christian Etim Sylvanus, who recounted how his father had acted against his mother.

The incident happened in the house where we all lived. The village chief summoned Itam police. The police came and asked me to accompany them to the station. ”

Mr Etim said “On 12/2/2018, my father, (the suspect) is a mechanic on the Water Board. On the said day, he used a match at night. My mother was asleep. He used it and cut my mother. My mother died.

On 12/2/2018 at 4:30 am, I called my wife and asked her how she was pregnant and who was causing it. He refused to answer angrily.

The son's testimony was corroborated by his father, the defendant, who confessed to police when he was arrested after the incident.

"I took a big match and cut off his right hand," Emah said in an official statement. He shuddered and ran, and I cut off his neck and fell. I was informed by people in our house that another Michael Udoh always slept with her whenever I left the house on my way to work,

Justice Nkanang, Delivering a verdict that lasted about an hour on Friday, the trial judge, Justice Bassey Nkanang, described the act as “an insult to the marriage institution in a senseless, unexplained and unreasonable way.

Defendant has pleaded with the Court to administer justice with mercy and give him another opportunity to return home to care for his five children.

 "The suspect, Nkereuwem Etim Emah, was sentenced to death. In accordance with Section 339 (2) of the Criminal Procedure Act, Cap 39, Akwa Ibom District Laws, the Court's ruling in your case, Nkereuwem Etim Emah is that you are hanged to death and may the Lord have mercy on your soul.
