a man has been sentenced to life in prison for killing his ex-girlfriend who is five months pregnant.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said on Tuesday that the Limpopo High Court had sentenced Raphiri Jappie Shiko, 32, to the brutal murder of Moloko Coslina Matete, 22.
On May 18, 2019, after his abduction, Matete was killed in Molinda village at Witpoort police station, outside Lephalale,
Ledwaba said:
The suspect went to the deceased's home and forcibly took him to a local football stadium where he strangled him with a wire and beat him before hitting his head with a stone.
He was found in breach of a protection order.
He went to her home after she applied for a protection order against him.
Ledwaba added: "A vicious criminal was arrested the next day and detained at Witpoort police station but later escaped from custody. He was re-arrested at his home in Kitty village, a few kilometers from the deceased's home.
Shiko has been sentenced to life in prison for murder.
The sentences must be handed down along with the life sentence, He was also sentenced to three years in prison for violating a protection order and 10 years for escaping from custody.
