A man receives two life sentences for using a wooden spoon to rape a woman, which resulted in injuries that led to her death
A 40-year-old man has been sentenced to two life terms for using a wooden spoon to rape a 20-year-old woman in Mjejane, near Komatipoort,
which resulted in her death.
Hendrick Nicholas Janse van Rensburg was sentenced on Tuesday in the Mpumalanga High Court in Mbombela in connection with the October 2019 incident.
According to police spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala, Janse van Rensburg and the victim, Andiswa Zitha, were strangers.
he left Zitha bloodied in his house.
Neighbors found her bleeding and took her to a Tonga hospital where she died the next day, Mohlala said.
A bloody wooden spoon was found near the woman and she was rushed to the Local Criminal Record Center for genetic testing and fingerprints, according to Mohlala.
Mohlala added:
She may have died from injuries to her genitals
Rensburg Janse van was arrested a year later.
The court ordered the sentences to run concurrently.
"The suspect was charged and taken to court where he was found guilty and sentenced to one life sentence for rape, and another life sentence for murder."
The provincial commissioner of police, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, welcomed the sentence.
he said, It is unfortunate to lose the life of a young girl in this way. We also hope that the sentence will be a barrier to others who may consider emulating the actions of the accused, ”he said.
